I am always happy when I stay at Whitebay. Because I am blind and deaf now my owners arefussy about where to leave me when they leave town. Max takes special care of me and always putsa jacket on me when I arrive if it's chilly. The runs are nice and warm and always clean.

I have only ever stayed in one other kennel and as Iwasn't very happy there my mum and dad always get Matthew to come and lookafter me when they go away.

But this time was different, Matthew was going onholiday too. Mum and Dad only had one option and I am so pleased they chose tosend me to stay with Max.

I am not anormal dog you see. I am not very good with other dogs and as I go to work inthe forest with Dad every day I am used to a lot of exercise.

Max took me forwalks and I didn't mind being around the other dogs very much. I was allowed myown blanket and my ball so I had something familiar around me to remind me ofhome.

Thanks Max for loooking after me so well. In the words of The Terminator 'I'll be back'.

Oh yeah Mum and Dad both say thanks fortaking such good care of me.

When a pet dies...

Our 14 year old dog, Abbey, died last month. The day after she died, my 4 year old daughter Meredith was crying and talking about how much she missed Abbey. She asked if we could write a letter to God so that when Abbey got to heaven, God would recognize her. I told her that I thought we could so she dictated these words:

Dear God,
Will you please take care of my dog? She died yesterday and is with you in heaven. I miss her very much. I am happy that you let me have her as my dog even though she got sick.

I hope you will play with her. She likes to play with balls and to swim. I am sending a picture of her so when you see her You will know that she is my dog. I really miss her.

Love, Meredith
We put the letter in an envelope with a picture of Abbey and Meredith and addressed it to God/Heaven. We put our return address on it. Then Meredith pasted several stamps on the front of the envelope because she said it would take lots of stamps to get the letter all the way to heaven. That afternoon she dropped it into the letter box at the post office.

A few days later, she asked if God had gotten the letter yet. I told her that I thought He had.

Yesterday, there was a package wrapped in gold paper on our front porch addressed, ‘To Meredith’ in an unfamiliar hand. Meredith opened it. Inside was a book by Mr. Rogers called, ‘When a Pet Dies.’

Taped to the inside front cover was the letter we had written to God in its opened envelope. On the opposite page was the picture of Abbey & Meredith and this note:

Dear Meredith,

Abbey arrived safely in heaven. Having the picture was a big help. I recognized Abbey right away.

Abbey isn’t sick anymore. Her spirit is here with me just like it stays in your heart. Abbey loved being your dog.

Since we don’t need our bodies in heaven, I don’t have any pockets to keep your picture in, so I am sending it back to you in this little book for you to keep and have something to remember Abbey by.

Thank you for the beautiful letter and thank your mother for helping you write it and sending it to me. What a wonderful mother you have. I picked her especially for you.

I send my blessings every day and remember that I love you very much. By the way, I’m easy to find, I am wherever there is love.

Can Cold Water Clean Dishes?  This is for all the germ conscious folks  that worry about using cold water to clean.

  John went to visit his 90 year old grandfather in a very secluded, rural area of Saskatchewan.

After spending a great evening chatting the night away, the next morning John's grandfather prepared breakfast of bacon, eggs and toast.

However, John noticed a film like substance on his plate, and questioned his grandfather asking,

'Are these plates clean?'

His grandfather replied,

'They're as clean as cold water can get em.
Just you go ahead and finish your meal, Sonny!'

For lunch the old man made hamburgers.

Again, John was concerned about the plates,
as his appeared to have tiny specks around
the edge that looked like dried egg and asked,

'Are you sure these plates are clean?'

Without looking up the old man said,

'I told you before, Sonny, those dishes are as clean as cold water can get them. Now don't you fret, I don't want to hear another word about it!'

Later that afternoon, John was on his way to a nearby town and as he was leaving, his grandfather's dog started to growl, and wouldn't let him pass.
   John yelled and said, 'Grandfather, your dog won't let me get to my car'.

Without diverting his attention from the football game he was watching on TV, the old man shouted!

'Coldwater, go lay down now, yah hear me!'

Here is a picture of one of our well trained staff. Labrador Sumo who is cooking steak for his dearly beloved family the Taylors of Eskdale.

Sumo selects only the best eye fillet, marinates the meat overnight, sprinkles in some herb rub then cooks the beef superbly turning once.

Unfortunately, up to now, the steaks have not been up to Sumo's high standards so he has been forced to eat then all himself.

Seems that Maxis too absorbed in the Rugby World Cup to do his job. Lucky he has us.

With me backingFrance, Maxwell the Labrador Cross backing Canada, Emma the Staffy Crossbacking England, Harley the American Cocker Spaniel, it’s a very rugby orientedkennel at the moment.

There are twonice posts on the website this month. One about the 911 dogs used in the World TradeCentre catastrophe (nice French word eh?). You can see pictures ofthese 10 year old (plus) dogs at work then and today in their retirements. Verynice.

The secondarticle is about Jasmine the English Greyhound and how she has done a wonderfuljob of caring for all sorts of animals in need. Hawke’s Bay has a very activeRacing Greyhound re-housing group so give Max a call, or see here Greyhounds as pets if you wish to own a Greyhound.

Now if you planto give your doggie a well deserve holiday at Motel Max, the Bark Royal of CanineQuartering better book in soon as the place is filling up.

Also forChristmas get your booking in as it will soon be entirely full and your petwill bite you for missing out.

It’s really goodhere with personal walks every day, 3 daily exercise runs of about half andhour and clean dry kennels all the time. Did I tell you about the filteredspring water we drink? Not the crappy stuff you humans have to suffer. Tux for breakfastand Chunky Dog Roll for dinner is really five star.

A Wonderful True Story

In 2003, police inWarwickshire, England, opened a garden shed and found a whimpering, coweringdog. The dog had been locked in the shed and abandoned. It was dirty andmalnourished, and had quite clearly been abused.

Inan act of kindness, the police took the dog, which was a female greyhound, tothe Nuneaton Warwickshire Wildlife Sanctuary, which is run by a man named GeoffGrewcock, and known as a haven for animals abandoned, orphaned, or otherwise inneed.

Geoff and the other sanctuary staff went to work with two aims: to restore the dog to full health, and to win her trust. It took several weeks, but eventually both goals were achieved. They named her Jasmine, and they started to think about finding her an adoptive home.

Jasmine, however, had other ideas. No one quite remembers how it came about, but Jasmine started welcoming all animal arrivals at the sanctuary. It would not matter if it were a puppy, a fox cub, a rabbit or, any other lost or hurting animal. Jasmine would just peer into the box or cage and, when and where possible, deliver a welcoming lick.

Geoff relates one of the early incidents. "We had two puppies that had been abandoned by a nearby railway line. One was a Lakeland Terrier cross and another was a Jack Russell Doberman cross. They were tiny when they arrived at the centre, and Jasmine approached them and grabbed one by the scruff of the neck in her mouth and put him on the settee. Then she fetched the other one and sat down with them, cuddling them."

"But she is like that with all of our animals, even the rabbits. She takes all the stress out of them, and it helps them to not only feel close to her, but to settle into their new surroundings. She has done the same with the fox and badger cubs, she licks the rabbits and guinea pigs, and even lets the birds perch on the bridge of her nose."

Jasmine, the timid, abused, deserted waif, became the animal sanctuary's resident surrogate mother, a role for which she might have been born. The list of orphaned and abandoned youngsters she has cared for comprises five fox cubs, four badger cubs, fifteen chicks, eight guinea pigs, two stray puppies and fifteen rabbits - and one roe deer fawn. Tiny Bramble, eleven weeks old, was found semi-conscious in a field. Upon arrival at the sanctuary, Jasmine cuddled up to her to keep her warm, and then went into the full foster-mum role. Jasmine the greyhound showers Bramble the roe deer with affection, and makes sure nothing is matted.

"They are inseparable," says Geoff. "Bramble walks between her legs, and they keep kissing each other. They walk together round the sanctuary. It's a real treat to see them."

Jasmine will continue to care for Bramble until she is old enough to be returned to woodland life. When that happens, Jasmine will not be lonely. She will be too busy showering love and affection on the next orphan or victim of abuse.

The 9/11 rescue dogs: Portraits of the last surviving animals who scoured Ground Zero one decade on

During the chaos of the 9/11 attacks, where almost 3,000 people died, nearly 100 loyal search and rescue dogs and their brave owners scoured Ground Zero for survivors.

Now, ten years on, just 12 of these heroic canines survive, and they have been commemorated in a touching series of portraits entitled ‘Retrieved’.

The dogs worked tirelessly to search for anyone trapped alive in the rubble, along with countless emergency service workers and members of the public.

Moxie, 13, from Winthrop, Massachusetts, arrived with her handler, Mark Aliberti, at the World Trade Center on the evening of September 11 and searched the site for eight days

Tara, 16, from Ipswich, Massachusetts, arrived at the World Trade Center on the night of the 11th. The dog and her handler Lee Prentiss were there for eight days

Kaiser, 12, pictured at home in Indianapolis, Indiana, was deployed to the World Trade Center on September 11 and searched tirelessly for people in the rubble

Travelling across nine states in the U.S. from Texas to Maryland, Dutch photographer Charlotte Dumas, 34, captured the remaining dogs in their twilight years in their homes where they still live with their handlers, a full decade on from 9/11.

Their stories have now been compiled in a book, called Retrieved, which is published on Friday, the tenth anniversary of the attacks.

Noted for her touching portraits of animals, especially dogs, Charlotte wanted ‘Retrieved’ to mark not only the anniversary of the September 2001 attacks, but also as recognition for some of the first responders and their dogs.

‘I felt this was a turning point, especially for the dogs, who although are not forgotten, are not as prominent as the human stories involved,’ explained Charlotte, who splits her time between New York and Amsterdam.

‘They speak to us as a different species and animals are greatly important for our sense of empathy and to put things into perspective.’

Bretagne and her owner Denise Corliss from Cypress, Texas, arrived at the site in New York on September 17, remaining there for ten days

Guinness, 15, from Highland, California, started work at the site with Sheila McKee on the morning of September 13 and was deployed at the site for 11 days

Merlyn and his handler Matt Claussen were deployed to Ground Zero on September 24, working the night shift for five days

Most of the search and rescue dogs are Labradors or Golden Retrievers and Charlotte feels that the title works across many aspects of the story.

‘I found the dogs, I retrieved them, they were there to retrieve the victims, it is nicely rounded,’ explained Charlotte whose work is being exhibited at the Julie Saul Gallery NYC opening on September 8, in time for the anniversary.

After working on a project about police canines and other working dogs, she was inspired to concentrate on the animals that played such a huge part in seeking survivors.

Contacting the NYPD, the New York Fire Department and the Federal Emergency Management Agency, Charlotte discovered that out of the nearly 100 dogs among the first responders deployed by FEMA, there were in fact only 15 still alive last year.

‘They were there for the first few weeks, they were trained to find people alive, although that is ultimately not what happened,’ said Charlotte, who will hold a fundraiser for the First Responder Alliance at Clic Bookstore in New York on September 29.

‘I traveled across the United States to meet with the owners and portray the dogs. They are all retired and I spent time with each of their handlers learning about their experiences.

‘It was moving talking to Denise Corliss, who is the handler and owner of Bretagne, one of the Golden Retrievers.

‘She told me a touching story of one fireman who was there in the rubble, and how taken he was with Bretagne who comforted him as he sat down to catch his breath.

‘It developed that even though the dogs couldn’t find people still alive, they could provide comfort for the brave firemen and rescue workers of the emergency services.’

Wishing to tell the other side of heroism from 9/11, each of Charlotte’s encounters with dogs such as Gabriel and Orion and Scout stayed with her.

‘The dogs are now old and they will soon pass away. Even during the time it has taken since my first work on the ‘Retrieved’ portraits to now, three of the final 15 have died,’ said Charlotte.

‘These portraits are about how time passes, and how these dogs and their portraits are offering us a way to deal with the things that happened as well as relying on them for comfort.’

Chester the greyhound reporting from Whitebay kennels. Max is too busy to write.

Uncle Max has been flat out like a possum on the road. With school holidays and the start of the ski season every man and his dog have been coming to Whitebay.

Of course we dogs don't complain what with Tux in the mornings and Chunky in the evenings. When the weather gets a tad cold those four heaters start running at full blast. Must be costing him a fortune :)

I have 17 other mates here at the moment and just before breakfast the "Whitebay Choir" is something to behold.

I am nice and warm in my run with my blankies. Max has issued coats to all the other short haired dogs who don't have one. I have two coats so I have a choice. Oh so cute.

We will be let out at about 9am after the frost melts. Then again about noon and again about 4pm. Max takes us all for lovely walks.

That's me in my purple jarmies and my mates in their coats!

Hey Max

I had a wonderful visit when I stayed with you for 5 days recently.

Although I had an awesome time hanging out with you and the other canine friends at Whitebay, I was really happy to see Corri & JB when they arrived to collect me. (I actually think they misses me!)

Since visiting you, I've since been to Taupo for a few days which was also a nice break. It's cosy by the fire which is my favourite place to nap, and from there I manage keeping an eye on whatever happens outside. On a good day I don't mind going out on the lake in the boat and I am very interested in what JB catches. The smoked trout smells real good!

Whitebay Boarding Kennels Our dog Zara stayed with Max & Liz for 2 weeks last year when we went on holiday. Their establishment is very clean & professionally run. Zara got an extra run every day for only $1 - as she is a big dog, this was great! Although she was very glad to see us when we picked her up (!) I would have no hesitation in using Whitebay Kennels again when we next go on holiday. Thanks max & LIz - keep up the good work!

Whitebay Boarding Kennel Good day to you all from Tobemory Hammon, a regular now at Whitebay and a self-confessed pampered fox terrier. 'Camp Whitebay', as Mum calls it, is a walk in the park. Max really gets to know us and has the good sense to buddy us up with others he feels we will get along with the best. He doesn't mind my bossy nature at all but actually seems to enjoy it. Not only is Max a bit of a softy, but he follows Mum's instructions well. I always get my morning Smacko, plus an exhilirating daily walk out and about. When I return I always enjoy Radio Rima which Max leaves tuned for our enjoyment in the kennels. There is plenty of room to run and play together in a safe and happy environment. My self-respect remains in tact with a very clean kennel and if it gets too cold in winter, the heating turns on automatically to keep us warm. I'm a big boy now at 6yrs of age and this is the third kennel Mum's tried - thanks to Max Mum never worries when I'm at Whitebay. Kindest regards Tobemory

Eddie Skafer Hi Max, Thank you so much for having me last month. I spend a lot of time just with my mum so it was nice to have a chance to make some new friends. I loved the walk on the lavender farm and mum was happy because, I came home quite clean for a white dog who had a few days of fun. We Love Whitebay Kennels! Dear Max, Thank you for my wonderful holiday.

My family had a great time on their own and so did I. I've stayed in many kennels but Whitebay is number one in my book. My bedroom was cozy, clean and warm.

The indoor lounge was very nice for my nap times and I loved listening to the stereo. The outdoor garden was great for visiting with neighbors, digging, running around, or just laying in the grass under the tree.

Your physical therapy services were excellent; my twice a day walks were very beneficial to my recovery from surgery. I enjoyed my daily beauty shop services as well.

The food was excellent, and the company first rate. I returned home looking and feeling great. My family was delighted. I will be back to enjoy another stay at Whitebay very soon.

Dad took me down the vets last Wednesday and the nice lady stuck a long glass thing up my arse. It must've showed something as the next thing I get a needle in my rump and squirts of foul smelling stuff up BOTH nostrils. And for this, the misery gave me a miniscule piece of dried liver!!

I was so pissed off with Dad, I didn't speak to him for three whole days and he got a good view of my rear end.

Hmmm, that was daunting - staying in a Kennel for the first time... Pretty intimidating too, all those barking dogs... But hey, once everything was settled down I really found my place. Liz and Max looked after me like a princess. I got to go for little walks, my home was clean, the food was excellent and I ended up making friends with some of the other dogs. I also enjoyed listening to the radio they had playing and that lavender smell was simply divine. Thanks Liz and Max. Thankyou for having me to stay for 5 whole days..I thought I would be
miserable and miss my owners and my buddy at home, though he is a very
elderly Jack Russel who is deaf so he never knows where I am and always gets
a fright when I bounce up behind him. I loved meeting so many new friends,
because I am so big I never thought the smaller dogs would be brave enough
to play with me, AND even sneak into my enclosure when you weren't looking!!

Well they are out now, and I would like to say that Rosie and I had a fantastic time at Whitebay....all those walks...and all those friends to meet and practice different barks with! We will persuade them to bring us back at the drop of a bone! (Hopefully they will be away again soon!)
Ooops I can hear them coming home now, so I will leave the computer and pretend I have been in my own bed all evening (little do they know that Ihave been on theirs!)

Thank you for looking after me so well on my first holiday away from my family. As I am only a nine month old beagle it was all so very new to me to go on my first sleep over away from my Mum and Dad and brothers and sister. Mum and Dad thought I was such a good boy when I got home, so calm and relaxed. I think Mum might even send me back for another wee holiday if I keep being so help full around the house, I have been bringing in the washing for her (not to sure why she seems a bit grumpy about it though?) I had a wonderful weekend at Whitebay. My humans were very worried as I am only 8 months old and it was the first time i'd let them go off without me, but they needn't have been. I had a great time chilling out in the comfortable, warm kennel, conversing with my gorgeous neighbours (i was the only boy!), walking around your lovely lavender farm and chowing down on the yummy food. I came home so relaxed and happy.

Jessie Black here. I want to say a big thankyou for letting me play and stay at your place when my humans were away. They said I even smelt nice when I got home! Usually I get a very "doggie" smell when I am at kennels apparently! ( I don't know what is wrong with doggie smells but there you are - humans are funny sometimes!). I enjoyed having grass to run on and my sleeping kennel was nice and cosy. It was good to be able to have my usual food too, thank you.

Hi Uncle Max,

Here's a picture of us, Pixie and Willy, beside the fire. Remember us? We're the frisky foxie sisters from Haumoana and we're not normally as placid as we appear in the photo. We're fast-paced action-adventure dogs, bred to keep up with horses and flush foxes from their holes and we regard all other furry creatures as prey. No one messes with us and when our owners dropped us off at Whitebay Kennels last month we were planning to give you a hard time (with a bit of yapping and disobedience), but It was freezing cold and wet when we arrived and you had a cosy kennel ready for us.

Not only that, there was a heater going and music to listen to and the next day some other dogs arrived and they were really nice. They told us the food was good, and they were right! So we decided we'd behave ourselves and we're sure glad we did. The walks were all we could hope for and the three weeks seemed like three days.

We had a great time with you and the other dogs, Uncle Max, and when our Owners came to pick us up it was a painful choice whether to stay or go. Let's hope they take off again soon!
